Reflections: Your Hero Journey - A Journey of Personal Growth and Global Transformation

Join Caroline Myss and Robert Holden for Your HERO Journey – a seven-part series in which they guide you on how to recognize your soul calling, say yes to your higher purpose, and live your sacred contract.

Seven 90-minute Lessons – Pre-recorded and available On-Demand

Overview of Your Hero Journey

Your HERO Journey is inspired by the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell, who taught about the Hero Archetype that lives in you. What is a hero? Campbell described a hero as “someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” He said, “A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder. Fabulous forces are there encountered, and a decisive victory is won.” In essence, a hero is someone who says YES to their sacred contract, and who lives their higher purpose.

On Your HERO Journey, Caroline and Robert weave an inspiring mix of teachings and practices from world mythology, spiritual traditions, modern psychology, and classic literature. In each class they guide you through the three stages of the Hero Journey, similar to the three acts in Greek drama, that follows a universal pattern of inner growth and transformation. Each class is illustrated with teachings and storytelling from Carl Jung, Theresa of Avila, St Francis of Assisi, J.R.R. Tolkien, William Shakespeare, T.S. Elliot, C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia), Robert Frost (The Road Less Travelled), The Wizard of Oz (L. Frank Baum), and films such as The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, and Dead Poets Society.

Your Hero Journey is designed to help live your soul’s purpose in a world that is experiencing “a death of normal”. Humanity must reimagine itself. The Future can only be changed in the present. And everyone is being called NOW to take “the greatest stride of soul ever took” to transform their life and live with greater purpose, meaning and inspiration.

“The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your adventure.”

Joseph Campbell, The Hero with a Thousand Faces

In our first class, Caroline and Robert set the scene for your hero journey. They introduce you to the Hero Journey Map, made up of three Acts: Act 1: end of normal; Act 2: the path of initiation; and Act 3: the return home. Carl Jung wrote: “The most important question anyone can ask is, “What myth am I living?” A myth is a great story that you want to be part of e.g. a renaissance, a reformation, a good deed for the world, etc. Jung wrote, “I asked myself, ‘What is the myth you are living?’ And found that I did not know. . . So I took it upon myself to get to know ‘my’ myth, and I regarded this as the task of tasks . . . I simply had to know what unconscious or preconscious myth was forming me.”

Takeaways

  • The Monomyth – the story of humanity and your soul’s calling. The monomyth is “a certain, typical hero sequence of actions that can be detected all over the world,” wrote Joseph Campbell.
  • The Mythic Journey: how would you describe your life journey? Where are you on your journey at present? What is the new story emerging in you?
  • The hero archetype: “When we quit thinking primarily about ourselves and our own self-preservation, we undergo a truly heroic transformation of consciousness,” wrote Joseph Campbell
  • Holy Grail Quest: what are you seeking? What are you searching for? What is your soul’s high adventure?

“A good life is one hero journey after another. Over and over again, you are called to the realm of adventure, you are called to new horizons. Each time, there is the same problem: do I dare? And then, if you do dare, the dangers are there, and the help also, and the fulfillment or the fiasco. There’s always the possibility of a fiasco. But there’s also the possibility of bliss.”

Joseph Campbell

The hero journey starts with “the end of normal” and “getting kicked out of ordinary.” Such a life-changing event is also called the “inciting incident” in Greek drama. The End of Normal takes many forms. For example, a personal life-event such as, death of a loved one, an illness or accident, a divorce, a redundancy, a financial crisis, kids leaving the nest, or getting married, having children, starting a new business, writing a book, and meeting a mentor or guide. The End of Normal can also be a global event such as, a health pandemic, a war, an economic recession, and climate change. What “end of normal” are you experiencing now? And what is the “call to adventure” that is summoning you?

Takeaways

  • Kicked out of Ordinary – The End of normal has happened, and there is no going back! “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore,” says Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
  • Call to Adventure – with every end of normal there is a call to adventure. It is time to say YES to your sacred contract and to live your higher purpose.
  • Refusal of the Call – Are you saying YES to your calling or are you refusing the call – doubting yourself, afraid to begin, distracting yourself, creating dramas, or unsure of what to do next?
  • Let go of your Plans! “We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us,” wrote Joseph Campbell

“The hero’s journey always begins with the call. One way or another, a guide must come to say, ‘Look, you’re in Sleepy Land. Wake. Come on a trip. There is a whole aspect of your consciousness, your being, that’s not been touched. So, you’re at home here? Well, there’s not enough of you there.’ And so it starts.”

Joseph Campbell

“At any time, you can ask yourself: At which threshold am I now standing? At this time in my life, what am I leaving? Where am I about to enter?” wrote John O’Donahue, the Irish mystic and poet. On the Hero Journey you must Cross a Threshold from the known world into the unknown world. This act of faith is essential if you are experience guidance, inspiration and help in living your sacred contract. In Sacred Contracts, Caroline writes, “A Sacred Contract is a learning process … It commits you to developing your inner consciousness and your understanding of how to work with forces greater than your own personal will.”

  • Guardians of the Threshold – what is your fear of crossing your threshold? What holds you back? What is stopping you in your tracks?
  • Belly of the Whale – like in Jonah and the Whale, here you resist your calling because it feels too big! I can’t do it! I’m not good enough! I’m lost. I want to turn back! Inside the belly of the whale, in total darkness, your miraculous transformation begins.
  • Supernatural Aid – On every adventure you will meet a Gandalf, a mentor, a guide, an angel, or a poem, a book, a prayer – some expression of supernatural aid – to help you on your quest.
  • Following your Bliss – when you follow your bliss – your inner guidance mechanism – you will experience more supernatural aid. “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls,” said Joseph Campbell.

“Furthermore, we have not even to risk the adventure alone; for the heroes of all time have gone before us, the labyrinth is fully known; we have only to follow the thread of the hero-path.”

Joseph Campbell

At the mid-point in your hero journey, you journey along a Road of Trials and must engage in an Ordeal in which you meet your greatest fear, your original wound, your lack of faith, and your inner dragon. “The ultimate dragon is within you, it is your ego clamping you down,” wrote Campbell. Your hero journey will include setbacks, obstacles, and challenges. At times you will feel lost, stuck, and unable to go on. BUT there will also be miracles and synchronicities that help you. What is your dragon? How does the dragon show up in your life? How will you befriend your dragon?

  • Meeting your Dragon – the dragon represents the fear and inner obstacle that is preventing you from living your higher purpose.
  • Milarepa’s Cave – the story of the much-loved Buddhist saint who found a way to overcome the demons that lived in his cave.
  • Dragons and Princesses – The poet Rilke, wrote, “Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage.”
  • The Ordeal and Defeat – before a great victory there is a defeat. The hero is defeated because they are relying on their ego-power. The Victory comes when the hero surrenders to a higher power.

“Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.”

Joseph Campbell

“It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.”

Joseph Campbell

“The ‘self’ that starts out on the hero journey is not the ‘Self’ that returns from the hero journey,” writes Robert Holden, in Higher Purpose. On your hero journey, you experience what Campbell called an “ego death”, and Carl Jung called “a psychic death.” Campbell said, “The ego is as you think of yourself.” To succeed in your journey, you must be willing to let go of who you think you are (your persona) to grow into the Self (your psyche) that you truly are. What does “ego death” mean to you? What must die and what must be born for you to complete your hero journey?

  • Death and Rebirth – on your hero journey you must die to your old self and be reborn. “The snake that cannot shed its skin must perish,” Nietzsche, often quoted by Campbell.
  • Meeting the Goddess – your death is a transformation, and in this process you will experience the Apotheosis, Meeting the Goddess, and Atonement of the Father.
  • The Phoenix Story – From a broken heart, a fallen hero, a dark night of the soul, out of the ashes, the Phoenix that arises
  • The Metanoia – On your hero journey you experience a metanoia – or holy shift – that helps you to bring ego and soul into alignment. And from now on you will experience yourself as human and divine.

“Where you stumble and fall, there you will find gold.”

Joseph Campbell

“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”

Joseph Campbell

In this class, Caroline and Robert explore the Hero Journey as a sacred journey. It is a journey of your spiritual transformation as outlined in the story of Moses, Abraham, Jesus and Mohammad. It is the journey from Jesus to Christ and from Siddhartha to Buddha. Is the meeting between Arjuna and Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita. It is the meeting between St Teresa of Avilla and St John of the Cross. It is the mystical path of the Marys – Mother Mary and Mary Magdalene. “In a Sacred Contract, an individual and the Divine commit to a mission that promises to expand that individual’s spiritual consciousness as well as further the expression of the Divine on earth,” writes Caroline Myss.

  • 40 Days and 40 Nights – learning about the mystical symbolism of the 40 days of transformation.
  • The Metaphorical 3 Days – exploring the mythical pattern that happens over three days (or three acts) – The Marriage of Cana, the Old Man and the Sea, the Easter Story, Paul on the road to Damascus, Beowulf’s three battles, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, etc.
  • Dark Night of the Soul – the journey of the dark night of the soul and how to navigate your way through the darkness.
  • Crucifixion and Resurrection – how to practice resurrection and rise again after the crucifixion.

“We’re not on our journey to save the world but to save ourselves. But in doing that you
save the world. The influence of a vital person vitalizes.”

Joseph Campbell

Now we move into Act Three of the Hero Journey and explore what Campbell called The Ultimate Boon, Refusal of the Return, The Magic Flight, and Rescue from Without. The term “ultimate boon” refers to the higher purpose of your hero journey. It is the holy grail – the ultimate gift – that you bring back from your travels. It is a gift you win for yourself and give to others. This great gift will reveal itself to you only after you’ve completed Acts One and Two of your hero’s journey. You are now the Master of Two Worlds and the spiritual aphorism Be in the world, but not of the world makes greater sense now.

  • The Ultimate Boon – bringing home the gift – the charism – of your hero journey which you will share with others.
  • Your Soul Gift – “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you,” Gospel of Thomas.
  • The Freedom to Live – the hero knows their own depths, and they live from their center. They cannot betray themselves. They will not sell out. They cannot be bought by the world.
  • Love for Humanity – we undertake the hero journey to share our love for humanity, to be of service, and to help the world evolve in the direction of love.

“One way or another, we all have to find what best fosters the flowering of our humanity in this contemporary life, and dedicate ourselves to that.”

Joseph Campbell

“The hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.”

Joseph Campbell
